Gyroporus purpurinus (Snell) Singer Cap 1-9cm across, broadly convex becoming flatter and often somewhat sunken; dark vinaceous red or burgundy; dry, uneven, minutely velvety. Tubes adnate, depressed becoming deeply depressed; white slowly aging yellow. Pores 1-3 per mm; white becoming yellow. Stem 30-60 x 3-8mm, stuffed but becoming hollow; same color as cap or browner, with top often pallid; somewhat roughened or velvety. Flesh fragile; white. Odor slight. Taste mild. Spores ovoid to ellipsoid, smooth, 8-11 x 5-5.6µ. Deposit bright yellow. Habitat under oak and other hardwoods. Found in eastern North America. Season August-September. Edible.
